A telecommunications firm is planning to create up to 100 jobs by opening a store targeting small businesses. Infinity Group, of Hamilton industrial estate, Leicester, said there was a huge gap in the market for a place where small firms could buy a full range of telecommunications equipment over the counter. The company said it wanted to locate the store in the Leicester area and planned to have it up
and running within 18 months. The business would initially create 25 to 30 jobs, but the workforce would quickly increase in size, said bosses.
Sales director Ty Wilson said: “There’s nobody in the Midlands doing anything like this. We would be easily looking at 100 jobs. We are looking to open it up in the next 18 months. At the moment, we are putting the plans together. This is something we are committed to. There’s a massive opportunity. It will be for small firms that need telecommunications kit – everything from telephone systems through to CCTV and IT equipment. We feel we know the kind of products people want.”
Mr Wilson said small firms were having to travel many miles outside the Midlands to get the kind of equipment they wanted over the counter. He is hoping to emulate the kind of range and service offered by telecoms equipment specialists such as Nimans, of Manchester. “We would envisage starting off with 25 to 30 people,” said Mr Wilson. “As we grow, more would be taken on, ending up with up to 100 people. I think this would be quite a quick process because we are filling quite a void.” Speaking about a possible location for the store, he said: “We would want it to be as close as possible. We have looked at a unit in our industrial estate down the road which has become vacant.”
Infinity recently completed its biggest acquisition, taking over Quark Communications, of Hampshire, for an undisclosed sum. The deal took Infinity’s turnover from £70 million to more than £71 million. Quark also employs 14 people, adding to Infinity’s existing workforce of 50. It plans to take total staff to 80 within the next few months through further acquisitions. “This is the biggest acquisition we have ever done,” said Mr Wilson. “We have been talking about it for a year. We are planning more in the future. We find it more cost-effective to buy another company to expand than build up something from scratch. This is because the infrastructure and customers are already in place. We have quite a few talks ongoing and we’ve had a number of people approach us.”
The company was set up by chief executive Simon Thakor in 2004. He realised there was a huge telecommunications opportunity in Leicester. It now has several divisions, including Infinity ICT for telecommunications and IT, Infinity Direct for wholesale distribution to mobile phone shops and Infinity Cellutel, which provides consumer and business mobiles.
